There are ninety pieces of original art in this fabulous 1930's-40's art student's portfolio collection. Rhoda Elliott Jr. III of Winchester, Massachusetts, a dedicated pupil of art, fashion and design, took courses at a young age at both the Museum of Fine Arts and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) in Boston. Her diligent practice shows clearly through her sweet and skillful figures and silhouettes. The portfolio includes 3 large paintings on boards, 15 smaller design board paintings, 10 ink paintings on paper, 62 ink and pencil sketches, and 1 letter dated 1938 written to a Mr. Newell, presumably a teacher or prospective employer, detailing her experience in art classes throughout high school. She continued her illustrative practice into college as later pieces are dated into the 40's. Included is a design idea for a Spring skirt suit pattern for Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as an outfit titled "Spring Drama" for Gertrude Lawrence, each with accompanying descriptions of the fabric and design. The sketches show a remarkable understanding of the human figure and form, poses and anatomy, including drawings of labeled musculature under the skin. Her sketches alone are a fabulous collection!
