WHITE, Walter
Rope & Faggot. A Biography of Judge Lynch
Alfred A. Knopf. SIGNED First Edition of Walter White's harrowing exposure of lynching, ROPE & FAGGOT, 1929, "the first full-length indictment of lynching of its time" inscribed by him, in original dust jacket. Passing for white, light-complected Walter White interviewed witnesses to and participants in more than 50 lynchings and race riots, even infiltrating the KKK. His deception was eventually discovered; with his life threatened, White was nonetheless successful in obtaining incriminating evidence against the Klan. Aided by a Guggenheim grant, White spent a year in France completing his study of "Judge Lynch," firmly debunking southern whites' insistence that lynching merely punished black men for raping white women. Inscribed by White on front flyleaf: "For Dr. George A. Towns with the regard of Walter White." Dr. Towns, a prominent officer of the Atlanta NAACP and an influential professor at Atlanta University, was also a lifelong close friend and correspondent of the dedicatee, James Weldon Johnson. Save for White's inscription, no writings or markings of any kind. Octavo, original yellow cloth, original dust jacket. An astonishing account, scarce in jacket, rare signed. Book #C3103. $2200.
