London: The Rainbow Press, 1974. First edition, first printing. Signed and numbered limited edition of 140 copies, this is no. 81. Association copy, additionally inscribed by the poet. Full calf over boards. Title and author stamped in gilt to the front panel. Designed and printed by Sebastian Carter. Text printed on Barcham Green Dover laid paper (horizontal chain lines, but no watermark, visible). Top edge cut smooth, fore-and bottom-edges deckled. The four divisional titles (each named after a season in titular order) are printed respectively in green, yellow, brown, and blue. Letter press printed. In the cork veneer finished slipcase. A very fine copy, with no blemishes to mention. Signed and numbered to the rear colophon page. Inscribed in blue ink (by Hughes) to the front free endpaper, "To Christine + George / much love / from Carol and Ted". The dedicatees are the Cypriot poet George Tardios and his wife. The dedication is followed by two handwritten "proverbs": "Marriage and ill-wintering tame both man and beast (Guernsey proverb)" (Christine was brought up in Guernsey) and "Hair by hair you may pluck a tiger bald (Cypriot proverb.)". A variant of the first proverb can be found as early as 1678 in a collection edited by one John Ray (1627-1705); the latter is also the third of the unpublished "Nine Jewels From Totleigh Mud" inscribed by Hughes to a copy of the 1973 Limited Edition of "Crow", also dedicated to the Tardios'.
