HUGHES, Ted; illustrated by BASKIN, Leonard; [TARDIOS, George]
CROW. From the Life and Songs of the Crow.
London: Faber and Faber, 1973. First edition thus, first printing. Signed and numbered limited edition of 400 copies, this is no. 226. This copy also inscribed by the author, with the additional bonus of an (unpublished) holograph poem in Hughes' hand. Large format, quarter bound in black cloth, with pale blue cloth-covered and bevelled boards, gilt lettering to the spine, with pale maroon endpapers. In the thick black card slipcase with a paper label, matching the endpapers, affixed centrally to the front panel, with the title, author and "Limited Edition" in black. Printed on heavy white T. H. Saunders mould-made paper, the top edges cut smooth and coloured red, the lower and fore-edges uncut. With twelve drawings by the poet's friend and frequent collaborator, Leonard Baskin (who designed the jacket for the original edition "Crow" three years earlier). An immaculate copy of this special, limited edition of Hughes' great sequence, the volume itself is flawless, crisp, clean with no marks signs of use. The slipcase shows a couple of minor surface abrasions, one to the rear, one to the upper spine: black on black, so barely visible. More noticeable is a small, half-centimetre abrasion to the top right corner of the front panel, where the uncovered board is visible. A lovely copy of this beautiful edition. Signed by Hughes and Baskin – and numbered – to the rear colophon. Inscribed by the author "To Christine and George / with love / from Ted March 31st 1976". The dedicatees are the Cypriot poet George Tardios and his wife. Tardios was director of Totleigh Barton, the Arvon … [Click Below for Full Description]
