Original bluish plum basket-weave embossed cloth, black paper label on front cover (gilt lettering faded but readable); green cloth chemise; green morocco pull of case by Bradstreet's (one joint split). FIRST EDITION of the first of three titles in the Grandfather's Chair series for children. It was Elizabeth Palmer Peabody--the sister of Hawthorne's future wife, Sofia--who published these stories when the original publisher, Nahum Capen, withdrew. BAL 7590; Clark A6.1.
