Some light spotting to the outer page edges in places. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Some edge-wear with a little loss at the corners and the spine ends with no loss of lettering. Closed tears to the lower front spine and flap folds. A few small nicks in places and some light spotting and age related markings in places. The wrapper remains very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. 'The Screwtape Letters' is dedicated to fellow Inkling member J.R.R. Tolkien and is a Christian apologetic novel by C. S. Lewis which is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior Demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter. The uncle's mentorship pertains to the nephew's responsibility in securing the damnation of a British man known only as 'the Patient'. A very attractive and extremely scarce first issue of one of Lewis' key titles. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
