France, Piedmont, Italy, Lombardy, the Tyrol and Bavaria. An Autumnal Tour.
London: Peter Jackson, late Fisher, Son, & Co., 1848. 2 volumes octavo. Original dark brown leather-grained cloth, title gilt to the spines, strapwork panels in blind to the boards, yellow surface-paper endpapers. Just a little rubbed, the spines mildly sunned ad consequently a touch brittle at the head with some minor chipping, else a very good set of this handsome production. 6 double-page high quality steel-engraved views after Bartlett, Leitch and others, stub-mounted to each volume. First edition of the second part of Buckingham's typically informative travelogue based on his extensive European tour 1846-8, the greater part of which is inevitably taken up with his time in Italy. Well preserved in the attractive publisher's cloth, engraved Fasque bookplates of the Gladstone family to both pastedowns: Fasque was "the Scottish house in the Mearns, in Kincardineshire, bought by [William Ewart Gladstone's] father, where he spent many parliamentary recesses until his father's death in 1851" (ODNB). Goldsmiths'-Kress 35487. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. [London, United Kingdom]
