Loose Photographs]: Early 20th Century Images of Mexico
1911. 32 loose glossy albumen photographs of Mexico. Each is 7" x 5", and nearly all are contemporarily well-captioned in English on the versos. Undated but circa 1909-1911. Small nick in the margin of one picture, a few flaws visible from the negatives, and some scattered sunning, else very near fine. Presumably the work of an American tourist, the images depict many scenes of small towns, rustic roads and the countryside, peasants working, a train scene, a line of burros, one image shows a woman doing laundry next to a wicker birdcage, and in the company of the family pig. There are additional images of cities, including the Flower Fiesta in Mexico City, monuments and various haciendas, and two of Abraham González, the Governor of Chihuahua and political mentor of Pancho Villa, in the driver's seat of an early automobile. He was murdered by supporters of the dictator Victoriano Huerta in 1913. Nice, well-documented images.
