Uncut in the original cloth-backed boards, paper label to spine. Initial advertisements present. Expertly refurbished, with spine label repaired, front cover and initial 2 leaves re-attached, joints and extremities repaired. Pages a little toned with some light foxing as as usual. A very good copy. First edition of the author's second collection of short stories. The collection is particularly notable as the first printing in book-form of "The Rifle", first published in the Atlantic Souvenir in 1827. The story is cited by Queen's Quorum's: A History of Detective Fiction as an early example of detective fiction. Legget was highly influential in the development of the western and nautical genres, both of which were emerging as recognised fields of literature in the 1820s and 1830s.
