UK: Victor Gollancz, London, 1952. A First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz in 1952. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends. A Little dulling of the gilt titling to the spine. Light spotting and toning to the text-block with light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete with very light edge-wear and light toning to the spine. The Val Biro wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Loosely laid in is a good, lengthy Typed Letter Signed by the author ('Daphne'). Four pages, 8vo and 4to, with Du Maurier's home address as the header: 'Menabilly, Par, Cornwall, 22nd January 1952'. Addressed to her publisher Victor Gollancz ('Darling Victor'). Du Maurier announces 'You really are the only publisher in the world!' and continues 'I can think of no one who would take the trouble, on a busy Monday with thousands of problems, to write me at length about the stories, and to say truthfully exactly what was right and what was wrong!', further adding 'Do you know, that out at Doubledays, they have what they call nine editors, who all sit round a table of immense proportions in a huge block on Madison Avenue, and every so often have a 'conference' about new manuscripts, and then everyone disagrees, and then the luckless author is written to (after several weeks) and somebody comes over and gives the author a luncheon and the M.S. is never discussed at all, and then there is a cocktail party, and after about nine months the author is told that after all the … [Click Below for Full Description]
