Original price of $15.95 on flap. Quarter bound: black cloth covered spine with gold lettering on spine & chestnut brown paper covered boards with gold title front panel. Mild foxing top textblock edge. Previous owner's bookplate with King James Bible quote (proverbs 3:13) affixed to front pastedown. Tight binding. Overall bright, clean, very good+ copy of scarce title. Charles Portis (1933 - 1920) was one of the best comic novelist America has produced. Only publishing five novels in his lifetime, Portis is known best for True Grit and Norwood. Both novels were first serialized in Saturday Evening Post. Both were later made into films starring Glen Campbell and Kim Darby: True Grit (directed by Henry Hathaway, 1969) & Norwood (directed by Jack Haley Jr., 1970). There was a second film version of True Grit (written & directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, 2010) that is considered by many the better of the two movies. By comparison, Masters of Atlantis is a little known. Many movie fans who love one or both versions of True Grit, do not know it is based on a reknowned book. In a Masters of Atlantis review I found on the internet, Damon Elliott Jordan writes, 'Charles Portis might just be the best writer that you’ve never read.'
