The Ortus, as this book is commonly known, was written by Van Helmot before his death and was published posthumously in 1648 by Van Helmot's son. Van Helmot himself feared to have the work published in his life time, as his 1625 work, De magnetica vulnerum. curatione drew the attention and the persecution of the Inquisition. The second volume in The Ortus consists of Van Helmont's four Opuscula Medica (De Lithiasi, De Febribus, De Humoribus Galeni and De Peste).A significant book in the history of medicine, with this second edition considered the best of the two editions as it includes the third edition of Van Helmont's Opuscula Medica and a new index.Provenance: The book contains Dr. Holmes' bookplate on the front paste-down, and contains the 1903 stamp of the Boston Medical Library (p. 9), which was reconstituted in 1875 by Dr. James Chadwick and Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, who served as the President of its executive committee, from 1875 to 1888. In 1889, Dr. Holmes donated his personal collection of over 900 rare medical works to the Boston Medical Library (BML), with this book presumably among the donated items.
