Julian Schnabel
Julian Schnabel CVJ - Nicknames of Maitre D's & Other Excerpts from Life EGH
Hatje Cantz, 2019. 153 Fig.Priority edition. Book (22.7 x 30.6 cm) in hand-painted linen cover, acrylic on canvas (39 x 49 cm), with PVC protective cover.Unique.In 1987 Julian Schnabel wrote CVJ - Nicknames of Maitre D's & Other Excerpts from Life, a kind of illustrated autobiography that traced the artist's path to success from a first-person perspective. At this point he had already taken part in the pioneering exhibitions of his time: "Westkunst" in Cologne (1981), "A New Spirit in Painting" in London (1981) and "Zeitgeist" (1982) in Berlin. The long out of print, opulently illustrated artist's book is now available again as a facsimile edition, for today's readers a captivating testimony in the sense of "The Artist as a Young Man".As part of the re-edition, Julian Schnabel realized a very special project in Edition Gerd Hatje: He personally painted, printed and sprayed individual linen-covered bookboards with acrylic paint. At the bookbinder, we bound the small original paintings on canvas by hand with the facsimile. Each book is unique - the contents are identical, the cover is a separate work! As different as the pieces are, they follow Schnabel's typical neo-expressionist painting in the gestural style and the superimposition of the paint. An extraordinary collector's item and a beautiful object!
