Contemporary half red morocco over red moiré cloth, spines with raised bands and richly gilt decorated, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Joints neatly repaired, title page and first half page plate to volume 2 of Holy Land very lightly spotted, verso of frontispiece to volume 1 of Egypt similarly, blank end-papers lightly tanned, corner crease to blank outer margin of frontispiece to volume 2 of Egypt, contents generally very clean. Overall one of the very cleanest sets we have had. Complete with lithographed portrait of Roberts by C. Baugniet, 2 engraved maps, 6 lithographed titles with vignettes and 241 tinted lithograph plates of which 121 are full-page and 120 half-page. Roberts was born at Stockbridge near Edinburgh, at the age of 10 became an apprentice house painter progressing, after his apprenticeship, to imitation stone work and panelling at Scone Palace and Abercairney Abbey. In 1818 Roberts, a self-taught artist, used his skills to gain employment as an assistant scene painter at the Pantheon theatre in Edinburgh moving on in 1921 to the Drury Lane Theatre, London where he workied along side Clarkson Stanfield. Stanfield and Roberts exhibited at the society of British Artists, Royal Academy and British Institution. By 1830 Roberts had firmly established a reputation as a topographical artist and was able to leave the theatre.
