[McMANUS, BLANCHE (binding design; frontispiece)]; BOYLAN, GRACE DUFFIE.
IF TAM O'SHANTER'D HAD A WHEEL; AND OTHER POEMS AND SKETCHES
New York: E. R. Herrick, (1898). Second Edition. 8vo (7 3/4 x 5 1/8). pp. 221.Signed binding design Blanche McManus in red and black on tan linen weave cloth of a 19th century modern-day Tam O'Shanter dressed in tartan (Duffie's first poem in the book is based on the 1791 Robert Burns character) on a bicycle, being chased by witches. The design is repeated as a mirror image on the rear board with Tam's flying tartan drape crossing the spine to link the two images. Along with McManus' design for Blown Away published in 1897, the design for If Tam O'Shanter'd had a Wheel, contains a striking use of connected mirror images that span both covers to create movement and sweep in this evocative design.A very good copy with light rubbing and faint soiling to the front board; light soiling and a degree of fading to the spine. A vanishingly scarce title regardless of condition. Minsky 1: 76; PBO PS3503.O93 I34 1898 (the Minsky copy); Not in UNCG.
