In publisher's slipcase, shelf worn at edges, stable binding. (Howes S82) (Monaghan, 3711). Signed on the half title of volume I, which is beginning to separate from text block. Inscription reads: "Lucius A. Crowell, with respect and good wishes. Carl Sandburg. 1939." The War Years were the best-selling volumes of Carl Sandburg's landmark series on President Abraham Lincoln. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1940 for The War Years.
