Superior, Wisconsin: D. F. Barry Photographer, circa 1890. An exceptionally clear original full length studio photograph of Rain-in-the-Face, Dakota Chief, and D. F. Barry, photographer, in front of painted backdrop. Barry, standing, wears suit, hat and pocket watch; Rain-in-the-Face sits on stone wall and wears long beaded necklace, two feathers in hair and holds rifle. The photograph, 6-1/4" x 9-1/4" (sight), matted to 9-1/2" x 13-7/8" on original Barry Studio mount, both photograph and mat with the studio blind-stamp "Barry" to lower left; additionally, blind-stamped "BARRY" lower right; backside of mount features the printed Barry Studio label reading: "D. F. Barry / Photographs of All Noted / Indian Chiefs / Photographer / 1316 Tower Ave. / Superior, Wisconsin." SIGNED IN PENCIL ON BACKSIDE OF MOUNT BY BARRY: "D. F. Barry and Rain in the Face." Rain-in-the-Face was one of the most feared Native American warriors of the late 19th century. A Hunkpapa Lakota, he has often been linked to the death of General George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana in 1876. When Longfellow needed an Indian warrior to play the villain in his poem about Custer's Last Stand, he intuitively selected Rain-in-the-Face, the fierce Lakota war chief who once boasted that he cut out Tom Custer's heart and ate it; (see Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Revenge of Rain-in-the-Face").
