Washington, 12 June 1975. Letter. Fine. Fine letter thanking Congressman Wilbur D. Mills for supporting his veto on the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1975, SIGNED "Jerry Ford." Mills was a Democrat from Arkansas who, as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee from 1958 to 1974, played a major role in the establishment of Medicare. Often called the most powerful man in Washington, he declined to run for re-election in 1976 after two public incidents with a stripper named Fanne Fox.
