TROTTMAN, Beresford Sylvester Briggs (ed)
Who's Who in Harlem. The 1949-1950 Biographical Register of a Group of Distinguished Persons of New York's Harlem
New York: Magazine & Periodical Printing & Publishing, Inc, [1949]. First Edition. Hardcover. First (and to our knowledge, only) issue of this invaluable directory of post-War Harlem, containing illustrated biographies of more than two hundred residents of the neighborhood, most but not all of African descent. In addition to many of the figures one would expect to find in such a directory -- Langston Hughes, Adam Clayton Powell, Roi Ottley, George Schuyler, etc. -- there are countless less prominent figures; merchants, clergymen, dancers, educators, most of them likely included in exchange for a small consideration. Dedication is to President Dwight David Eisenhower; includes a frontispiece commemorating the recently-deceased Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Quite uncommon, especially in such nice condition. Octavo. Pebbled cloth, lettered in gilt on front cover; 79pp; illus; ads. A straight, tight copy, free of signs of use or significant wear -- Near Fine, and uncommon thus.[Attributes: First Edition]
