A beautifully bound set of one of the finest illustrated editions of the Bible 12 volumes in 6, quarto (307 x 232 mm). Contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco by Charles Hering (with his ticket in vols. 1 and 6), spines with five sets of double raised bands, compartments lettered and tooled in gilt, covers with two-line gilt border enclosing a central panel with delicate foliate corner pieces, gilt edge rolls, richly gilt lotus-and-palmette roll to turn-ins, pale brown endpapers, pastedowns with a foliate blind roll, blue silk page markers, edges gilt. With 300 engravings, of which 252 after designs by Clément Pierre Marillier and 48 after those of Nicholas-André Monsiau, folding map of the Holy Land. Late 19th-century bookplate of Richard William Smith Griffith to front pastedowns and his later monogram bookplate on verso of front free endpapers. Spines slightly faded, occasional scuff to extremities and covers, a few minor marks to covers, mild foxing to contents but overall quite clean, a couple of small chips to text block, never affecting text, front hinge of vol. 3 just starting. A handsomely bound, wide-margined set. First edition thus, a particularly large copy of the superior quarto issue, with the plates after two of the finest French illustrators of the period, Marillier and Monsiau. This is a beautiful set bound by Charles Hering (d. 1809), "the artistic successor to Roger Payne, the doyen of English bookbinders" (Marks, p. 46).
