Edited, with a revision of the text by both Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke. In a sumptuous full calf binding with lovely gilt detailing to the spines. With a portrait frontispiece of Shakespeare to the first volume. Volume I has an extensive preface, a chronological table of Shakespeare's life, his will, the dedication prefixed to the first folio, the address prefixed to the first folio and lines on the portrait of Shakespeare. To the rear of the first volume there is a verbal and sentential glossary, indexed. These volumes contain all of Shakespeare's plays and his poems. The poems are found to the rear of the fourth volume and contain all of his sonnets. A lovely set of the Bard's plays, edited by two prominent Shakespearean scholars of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Cowden Clarkes are known for several critical texts regarding Shakespeare. These include 'Shakespeare Characters', 'Complete Concordance of Shakespeare' and 'Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines'. The aforementioned concordance was Mary Cowden Clarke's greatest work, she issued it in eighteen monthly parts, having started the work in 1829, it was eventually published in 1844-5.
