A collection of portraits, accompanied by short biographies, of eminent British figures throughout history from Edmund Lodge. Illustrated with two hundred and forty engraved plates (collated and complete). Including biographies of Katherine Parr, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, Francis Drake, Catherine of Braganza, Henry VIII, Nelson, Wellington, Bacon and many others. Sir Edmund Lodge, KH (1756-1839), was a long-serving English officer of arms, a writer on heraldic subjects, and a compiler of short biographies. Complete in twelve volumes. In half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with beautifully decorated spines in gilt with red and blue leather, marbled boards with some rubbing and wear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some foxing and tanning to the plates and end papers. Approximately 10 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles on red leather, gilt decoration, scratches and marks, to Vol I particularly. Joints good condition sound, gently rubbed.
