Folded highway map of the United States opening to colorful wall-sized map 36 x 55 inches depicting the whole of the United States with special attention focused on the Oregon Trail, highlighted in blue, extending from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon City, Oregon. To the left of the map is a column 5 inches wide extending from the top to the bottom of the map with extensive text describing the objectives of the Oregon Trail Memorial Association. Map Lithographed and Printed by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore, Maryland. Slight paper loss along some fold lines, plus one 1/4 inch hole at center right of map; light creasing to many fold intersections; overall very good clean condition. An uncommon item. As early as 1912 the Association proposed a bill to go before Congress to create the National Highways Commission, tasked with creating a 150,000 mile highway system which would "bind the states together in a common brotherhood and thus perpetuate and preserve the Union."
