Photos. Hull No. 2040. "World Hero" - official shipyard album documenting daily progress on the construction of an oil tanker.
Yokohama, Japan: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd,, 1970. Quarto (297 x 210 mm), manila card Lion brand folder with Acco-fastener post-binder, manuscript notes on front cover & spine, typed label inside front wrap. 168 leaves, unnumbered, medium wove paper stock, 247 mounted silver gelatin photographs, sized between c.90 x 128 mm and 105 x 255 mm, these latter being a series of impressive 180-degree panoramas, all leaves with typed date. Wrappers somewhat rubbed and a little soiled, marginal tidemarks, front panel lacking lower fore-corner, a few other minor chips, mounting leaves curling due to the attachment of the photographs, contents otherwise sound with all images retaining dark tones and strong contrast. Remarkable "time-lapse" shipyard photo album documenting the construction of the oil tanker World Hero in 1970; from keel laying on May 7, 1970, to launch September 23, 1970, and finally delivery to Aquarius Shipping Co. on December 1, 1970. World Hero was constructed with a DWT - dead-weight tonnage - of 226,466 tons, and was one of the transitional oil tankers built immediately after the 1967 Six-Day War and the consequent closure of the Suez Canal. With the canal unavailable oil companies and ship owners explored the economies of scale offered by larger oil tankers, ending with the supertankers of the later 70s. By the time the Suez Canal was reopened in 1975, the tankers in common use were just too massive to pass through.
