Illustrated throughout. A unique collection of papers and photographs documenting the history of a family-owned German wine business across two centuries. Beginning with a photograph of Ernst Ferdinand Cronenbold, who founded the company in 1847, this extensively illustrated scrapbook charts the growth of what would later become known as Carl Wiewels, a wholesale wine merchants in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. Carl Wiewels was sole owner of the firm from 1883-1903 and it appears that the company specialised at first in Piesporter; by 1913 the company's spring wine list included 92 different varieties. Documents such as contracts, export applications, bottle labels, business plans, handwritten letters, bills of sale, price lists, photographs of the shop and workers, judicial reviews of staff theft, advertisements, telegrams, certificates, and newspaper articles are included. There are a large portion of documents relating to the company's 100 year anniversary in 1947, and an emphasis on their frequent international trade with Hong Kong, Yokohama, and Kobe. Great care has been taken in the composition and layout; group photographs of employees, for example, have been overlaid with transparent paper on which faces have been numbered, with names provided in a corresponding list.
