With A Biographical Notice of the Author. 1st thus edition. 12mo, ¾ leather with marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine with 5 raised bands with spine labels (Jane Austen's Works in rust, and Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey in black), marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, engraved undated title page says "By Jane Austen" and printed title page dated 1857 reads "By Miss Austen," 528 pages (P&P to 326, NA to 528). Condition: VERY GOOD- : with rubbing to board edges, corners and spine head (has a 1" tear at front hinge) and tail, front board is slightly loose (has been linen-taped inside), spine is faded and gilt rubbed, especially to the "Jane Austen's Works" label, leather on boards is rubbed and paper on boards is fading, front endpaper at hinge is taped with brown linen tape, internally clean and tight with page 265 browned and a faint ghosting of the title page engraving on the before and aft pages, stain at edges of first few pages. A nice copy of this rare American edition. An advert in the rear of the companion volume of S&S and P tells us that Derby & Jackson published this in their "Standard Female Novelists" Series [and wrongly described as the First American edition]. The series was offered in cloth or in this half-calf and included 4 volumes: S&S with P [I have this volume as well], this volume P&P with NA, MP, and Emma.
