1873. [the third UK printing, fine] With One Hundred and Twelve Illustrations. Third Edition. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1873. 8 pp ads dated "for the season 1872-73." Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black and gilt, beveled, all page edges gilt. "Third Edition" -- i.e. the third printing of the first English edition -- of Verne's classic tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Sampson Low published the first edition in the English language in November 1872 (but dated 1873, like this "third") -- replete with 112 illustrations (all but two of them full-page plates), which equates to one every 2.7 pages of text. The first printing in fine condition is now virtually impossible to find: we have sold only two such copies over our 40 years in business, both of which were priced above $40,000.00. These early Sampson Low editions are much scarcer than the "Smith" editions of Boston, and are also scarcer than the Osgood editions of Boston. Sampson Low continued to issue further printings of this edition, still in the same binding (these too are very scarce today): T&M cites this Sampson Low third edition as having been published by April 1873. All of these UK printings feature a pictorial binding showing the Nautilus scanning the ocean floor and all kinds of sea life with a gilt beam of light; on the spine is a bug-eyed "poulp" (giant squid). This copy is in terra-cotta cloth -- we have also had various UK printings (between the 1st and the 7th) in dark red, in green, in blue, in brown, or in purple cloth.
