Adriaan Schoonebeek, Amsterdam, 1695. Only Edition. This gallery of historical and mythological pictures pairs illustrations with quotations from classical literature and the editor's interpretation of these texts. A student and collaborator of Romeyn de Hooghe, Schoonebeek became the art instructor of Peter the Great. From the library of classical scholar, friend of Dibdin and founding member of the Roxburghe Club, Henry J.T. Drury (1778-1841) with his inscription on the flyleaf: "coll: per H. Drury Harrow/ C.III.3" (Catalogue (1827) 3914). Later it passed to Robert Samuel Turner (1818-87), "A man whose principal claim to remembrance is his library.comprising the finest known copies of literary rarities.remarkable for the beauty of the copies, and their bindings" (Quaritch, Book Collectors). De Ricci pronounced Turner "an extremely refined collector, a great connoisseur".
