Adams, Henry
Letter Nov 8, 1864 Commenting on Captain John Smith
1864. Speculating on the authenticity of a will of Captain John Smith's father and that is was unlikely Adams would be working on a biography of Francis Drake. A 2-page autograph letter, signed in full, 8 November 1864, in London, to Charles Deane. Adams was only 26 when he wrote this letter, and was serving as secretary to his father Charles Francis Adams, ambassador to England during the American Civil War, but his serious interest in the historical record of the United States is evidenced. Adams would go on to become one of the greatest American historians, pioneering the study of Medieval history at Harvard and the seminar approach to education, writing a ten volume history of the early years of the republic and, of course, being the author of The Education of Henry Adams - named the most important book of the 20th century in English by editors of the Modern Library. Adams' letters are rarely available, most have been acquired decades ago by institutions such as Harvard and the Massachusetts Historical Society. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
