Random House, New York. The first American printing, one of 1,700 copies published by Random House in 1944. Bound in publisher's white cloth backed indigo boards. A near fine example of the book with light strip of toning to the head of spine ( corresponding with jacket chip ). Dust jacket very good with short chips to edges and a short tear to front fold at joint. W. H. Auden has crossed out his printed name and signed the title page underneath. He has also hand corrected the misprint on page 128, correcting looked to locked. Includes two long poems by Auden " For the Time Being - a Christmas Oratorio " and " The Sea and the Mirror - A Commentary on Shakespeare's The Tempest ".
