Doubleday, Page and Co., Garden City, 1912. SCARCE. First American Edition and first separate edition of Kipling's and England's beloved poem, first published in Rewards and Fairies (1910). Originally written in 1895 as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson, leader of the Jameson Raid against the Boers in southern Africa in 1895-96. Original paper covered boards, string-tied, printed in red and black, oblong 12mo measuring 4 3/8 " h x 6 1/2" w, blank end papers and eight double leaves printed one side and with red decorative borders. A lovely gift-quality Near Fine copy, contemporary prior owner inscription front paste down, a few small spots of toning front end papers, small surface tears top and bottom rear joints.
