CONSILIUM, IN QUO DE CONSERVANDA VALETUDINE, FIRST EDITION 1629, Latin text, small 4to, 200 x 155 mm, 7¾ x 6 inches, a few woodcut head- and tailpieces, 2 folding engraved plates, 78 pages plus 1 blank leaf, bound in the full red morocco of the library of French statesman Jean-Baptiste Colbert chief minister to Louis XIV, triple ruled gilt border to covers, at centre his gilt coat of arms within oval frame showing a snake surrounded by the collars of the Orders of St Michael and of the Holy Ghost, gilt decorated raised bands to spine, gilt decoration in compartments plus Colbert's monogram "JBC" with a crown above it, gilt decorated edges to covers, edges speckled red. Very slight bump to lower corner of upper cover, a few very slight marks to cover, pale age-browning to endpapers, old armorial bookplate to front pastedown, details of ownership erased, pale age-browning to text, "Bibliothecae Colbertinae" written neatly in old ink at the top of the title page. A good tight copy of a scarce medical book. Wilhelm Fabry (1560-1634), is often called the "Father of German surgery", as he was the first educated and scientific German surgeon.
