[AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY & LITERATURE] CANOT, Theodore; Brantz Mayer, ed
Captain Canot; or, Twenty Years of an African Slaver. Being an account of his career and adventures on the coast, in the interior, on shipboard, and in the West Indies. Written out and edited from the Captain's Journals, Memoranda and Conversations [Autograph Letter, Signed, Tipped in]
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1854. Tenth Thousand. Hardcover. Publisher's copy of a later printing, with a 2pp. letter (approx. 225 words) from Mayer dated Baltimore, June 13, 1854, and addressed "Dear Sir," regarding various textual changes that need to be made and asking for the return of the original manuscript: "The M.S. of my book has not reached me, tho you said it would be forwarded last Friday. I sh'd not like to lose it." Among the changes Mayer requests are the removal of the term "Prefatory Letter" at the head of his dedication page; and the removal of a comma, which "alters the reference from Canot to Hale, & it must not." Mayer, founder of the Maryland Historical Society, would edit a number of manuscripts for publication, including the journals of Charles Carroll, the Maryland planter and signer of the American Declaration of Independence. Octavo (20cm.); publisher's brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered spine; [2],xvii,[1],448,[12](ads)pp.; engraved frontispiece and added title page. Extremities rather rubbed and worn with exposure of boards, spine very slightly cocked and ends chipped, textblock rather soiled, else a Good and sound copy.
