London, T Osbourne. 1757. Substantial folio (270 x 420mm, 10 1/2 x 16 1/4 ins), contemporary reversed calf, very worn and defective, stitching broken in a couple of places, boards loose. Apparently lacking 1 leaf of Preface, otherwise complete. Engraved frontispiece (margins torn), 60 finely engraved copper plates, a couple of which are uniformly lightly yellowed (as usual), a few insignificant spots, otherwise in very good condition, with good margins, strong platemarks and overall good impressions. Some marginal spotting and yellowing to text. First Edition. Hill was an apothecary by training, the month-by-month gardening directions are reflected in the chronological sequence of the baroque, swirling, wonderful copper plates, combining the horticultural with the medicinal. The final lines inform the Publick that Deadly Nightshade "Trials have been made but few have succeeded: it has no specifick Virtue against Cancers, and its Use may be hurtfull."
