Bennett, Arnold 1867-1931.
A Man from the North
John Lane and the Bodley Head, London, 1898. First edition 1st issue copy, with adverts to rear dated 1897. Author: Enoch Arnold Bennett. Here we have his very first published novel. This is now uncommon. Bennett is best known for his novels and short stories. He strongly believed that literature should be accessible to ordinary people, and he deplored literary cliques and élites. This novel is semi autobiographical and focuses on a London Life as seen through a man with an aspiration towards achieving the idyllic working, social and personal life! Many of his characters are discernibly based on real people in his life. His Lincoln's Inn friend John Eland was the source for Mr Aked in Bennett's first novel, A Man from the North. An uncommon title and very good in the original red cloth, titles clear in white to upper cover. Slightly lighter to spine, and with light chipping to cloth to spine head. Unmarked copy, pages are clean, rough edged as called for, small finger nail loss to margin of p.265, not affect text. p. 265, [ii], adv iii - xii [ii]. [ DTM ] Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: BiblioFile [Cadole, FLINT, United Kingdom]
