[Music]. [Brunk, C.H.]
The Christian Harp and Sabbath School Songster. Designed for the Use of the Social Religious Circle, Revivals, and the Sabbath School
Singer's Glen, Va: Joseph Funk's Sons, 1867. Good plus.. 112pp. Oblong 12mo. Original yellow printed wrappers. Moderate wear and soiling to covers, spine ends chipped, corners worn. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on end leaves and title page. Lightly foxed. Third edition, first published in 1865. Scarce hymnal, with printed musical score. The introduction notes that increased demand for "this little work, have induced the publishers to issue a Third Edition, which has been enlarged and improved. Some pieces in the former Edition have been replaced...." Kauffman's Mennonite Cyclopedic Dictionary attributes the hymns to C.H. Brunk. Singer's Glen is located in Rockingham County, Virginia, slightly northwest of Charlottesville near the border with West Virginia. Interestingly, this copy was once the property of the Garber family, with ownership inscriptions dated 1868 at Shenandoah County, and the following year passed to a Noah Early in Allen County, Ohio, in the northwestern corner of the state. OCLC lists five copies of the present edition -- at Brown University, the Mennonite History Library in Indiana, and three copies in Virginia, including one at the UVA. All early editions are relatively scarce, and were likely used into oblivion.
