Cassell, Petter and Galpin, London, c. 1880, Two vols in one book, 737 pages. 12 ½ inches x 10 ½ inches x 2 1/2 inches, (heavy book) half bound in black calf leather, raised bands with gilt decorations and gilt letting, textured blue cloth boards. Pages clean, binding tight, VG or better overall. Author Miguel de. Cervantes. Frontispiece and a total of 117 other beautiful plates, 40 are steel etchings. The text is the translation of Jarvis (first published 1742), "with occasional corrections from Motteaux' translation. Illustrator Gustave Dore work first appeared in French translations and was most known for his incredible woodcut engravings. He established himself as a prolific 19th-century illustrated and artist and the demand for his work was escalating. This book is often labelled "the first modern novel" and many authors consider it to be the best literary work ever written! When first published, Don Quixote was usually interpreted as a comic novel. After the French Revolution, it was better known for its central ethic that individuals can be right while society is quite wrong and seen as disenchanting. In the 19th century, it was seen as a social commentary, but no one could easily tell "whose side Cervantes was on". Many critics came to view the work as a tragedy in which Don Quixote's idealism and nobility are viewed by the post-chivalric world as insane, and are defeated and rendered useless by common reality.
