Hawthorne, Nathaniel
The House of the Seven Gables, A Romance
Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields. First edition, with four pages of March 1851 advertisements bound into the front of the text. Publisher's dark brown ribbed cloth (BAL's "A" binding), decoratively stamped and ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, pale yellow endpapers. A very good copy with some to the extremities, corners a bit frayed, a few light scattered stains to the covers, spine and hinges neatly repaired. Housed in a custom crimson slipcase with folding chemise. BAL 7604. The House of Seven Gables is a Gothic novel, inspired by Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll's house with seven gables in Salem, Massachusetts, and his ancestor's involvement in the Salem witch trials. The plot features an archetypal New England family, the Pyncheons, who live in the seven-gabled house, which has been haunted since its construction. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne explores class-related issues and the pursuit of wealth, peppered with hints of the supernatural. Although the novel is set in Hawthorne's time, The House of Seven Gables provides insight into earlier years by exploring the house's history. Today, the house is a museum in Salem.
