Dakota Odowan. Hymns in the Dakota Language with tunes
American Tract Society, New York, 1853. 127 pp. 8vo. INSCRIBED IN ENGLISH AND DAKOTA. IN DELUXE PRESENTATION BINDING. Inscription reads in on ffep: "Miss Chesbrough Vicinyana waxtes. Compliments of Arko Isantanka hanakon tipie xmtaxecha wapaha. A memento of her sojurn in the land of the Dakota, the land of beautiful women." Riggs and his wife moved to Lac qui Parle in 1837, where Riggs worked with Joseph Renville Sr. to tranlsate the Bible into the Dakota language and perform missionary work among the Santee Dakota. In 1851, Riggs was involved in explaining terms at the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux and served as an interpreter during the trial of 38 Lakota who were hanged for their participation in the Lakoyta uprising in Minnesota in 1862. This volume, a hymnal in Dakota including fully written out musical notation for the tunes of hymns, was published several times without date on the title, though the present pagination conforms with the first edition.
