Carroll (Lewis)
The Nursery "Alice" containing twenty coloured enlargements from Tenniel's Illustrations to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with text adapted to nursery readers. The cover designed and coloured by E. Gertrude Thomson.
Macmillan, 1890. half-title, colour lithographed frontispiece with tissue guard, 19 further colour illustrations on letterpress, tissue guard spotted, endpapers toned, occasional faint spots, but generally clean internally, pp [xii], 56, [8], 4to, original cloth-backed pictorial glazed paper boards, corners worn, back strip rear hinge slightly frayed, boards faintly spotted, with a few abrasions, good. The first set of sheets printed by Edmund Evans, rejected by Dodgson as being 'far too bright and gaudy' were used in America, for an 1891 issue after the sheets of the present edition were exhausted, and for the 'People's Edition' with an unchanged 1889 date. The glazed casings prepared for the aborted sheets of the first printing were used on subsequent issues (including this copy). The present copy is of the first published, but second printed, edition, with 'Price Four Shillings' on the title, Cheshire cat illustration without the Alice profile, and the Sylvie and Bruno publisher's addendum. Dodgson was delighted with the improved colour reproduction, noting in his diary that The Nursery Alice, in this state, 'is a great success.' (Weaver Collection 482: Williams [et al] 216 [186])
