Louise, Marie (1791-1847) - Letter signed as Empress re: letters from Napoleon I. - Austrian archduchess who reigned as Duchess of Parma from 1814 until her death. She was Napoleon's second wife and, as such, Empress of the French from 1810 to 1814. Letter signed "Marie Louise". 1p., bifolium with golden edges, 7.25 x 9.0 inch, Paris, 1814 January 27. In French: "Mon Cousin, j'ai recu ce matin des lettres de l'Empereur. Il est arrivé en bonne santé à Chalons après dix huit heures de route. Je m'empresse de vous donner cette nouvelle qui vous fera plaisir, priant bien qu'il vous ait, mon cousin, en sa sainte et digne garde". Translated: "My Cousin, I received letters from the Emperor this morning. He arrived in Chalons in good health after eighteen hours on the road. I give you this news which will make you happy.". Slightly stained, else fine condition. Only two days later, on January 29, 1814, Napoleon defeated Prussia and Russia in the Battle of Brienne near Chalons.
