Coloniæ Allobrogum (Cologny): Cl. & Ant. Philibert, 1760. We are delighted to present a 2nd edition copy of the Jesuit Edition of Newton s incredibly key work. The importance of the Principia to the history of science truly cannot be overestimated, and the Jesuit Edition is one of the most ambitious and useful editions of this work. First published 1687, Newton s Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (or Principia ) states his laws of motion, forming the foundation of classical mechanics; Newton's law of universal gravitation; and a derivation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion (Wikipedia). 2 further editions were published, in 1713 and 1726. The latter is what the Jesuit Edition was based on, edited by French Minim friars (not Jesuits) Thomas Le Seur and François Jacquier, with the assistance of Swiss mathematician Jean-Louis Calandrini. The JE is extensively annotated, and especially 'valued for its copious commentary' (Babson). It includes several commentaries, explanations and addendums to the Principia. It contains additional prize-winning scientific pieces on tides and gravity which were submitted in 1724 to the Academie des Sciences by Bernoully, Euler, and others. which represents the sum of work on the theory of tides undertaken after the first edition of the Principia and Laplace.
