An extensive history of philosophy, by the author whose five-volume Historia Critica Philosophiae formed the basis of William Enfield's The History of Philosophy, the first English language history of philosophy to treat thinkers beyond ancient history (Locke, Newton, Hobbes, Leibniz, Descartes, etc.). Brucker is known primarily for his massive Historia Critica Philosophiae (5 volumes, 1742-44 with an Appendix, 1767). Passmore calls that work "the standard history of philosophy [in the 18th century], to which both Kant and the Encyclopaedists, for example, were very considerably indebted."
