Original Manuscript Map by J.Fairbank & Sons 1828 entitled " A Plan of the West Lodge Estate near Sheffield belonging to Thomas Holy Esq
SHEFFIELD. J Fairbank & Sons.1828. A unique manuscript map on rollers over four feet by three in two sections backed on to linnen by the celebrated Sheffield cartographers.West Lodge was in the heart of the present Hospital / University area and the plan is bounded by Broad Lane, Clarkson Street and Glossop Road. [Pitt Street, Albert St. and Claremont are also shown] Through the centre runs a "Proposed Street" to be called Northumberland Road and beside it a [later] panel giving a set of costs, including surveying, excavation, sewers, drains, boldering [sic] edge stones plus two years interest. Totalling £1.5.0 [shillings] or 12/6 per yard [This dated Nov 11th 1848]. Landowners of adjoining plots are all identified and as the plan was clearly used and added to over many years there is a mass of faint pencil annotations [making restoration a problem though some repairs have been carried out] There is also a scale & compass rose. The Quaker family of Fairbank flourished as surveyors and map makers in Sheffield for several generations.They were actively engaged in local enclosures, railways, canals, roads and waterworks, their activities extended beyond Sheffield to cover South Yorkshire,and many of the adjoining counties.Their printed maps of the city of 1771 and 1797 are well known but original examples of their work are hard to come by.The companies papers,field books,maps and records being in the Sheffield City Archives. A copy of T. Walter Hall's definitive The Fairbanks of Sheffield 1688-1848. is available.
