[Virgin of Guadalupe].
Constituciones de la Real Congregacion de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de México, fundada en la Iglesia de S. Felipe el Real de esta Corte
1780. Madrid. Joaquin Ibarra. 4to, (188 x 126 mm). Engraved plate of the Virgin of Guadalupe, title page, 36 pp. - First edition apparently, extremely rare, of the constitutions of the Congregation of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe and La Morenita, Patroness of the Americas, and a symbol of Mexican culture and identity, illustrated with a full-page plate by Bartlome Vazquez "Bart. Vazqz fecit M 1780". The work commences with a historic overview of the apparitions and evolution of the cult, and follows with the actual constitutions, or rules for the administration and management of the Congregation. The Virgin of Guadalupe iconography is deeply linked to the culture of Mexicans, both religiously and in pop culture. Institutionally we locate copies at University of Dayton, Biblioteca nacional de Mexico, University of London, Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores, Berkeley Library, and JCB. We were unable to locate a copy having sold at auction according to RBH, neither examples offered in the trade. Medina, BHA, 495.
