Rodriguez de Arispe, Pedro Jose
Colosso Eloquente que en la solemne aclamacion del Augusto Monarcha de las Españas D. Fernando VI... de la Imperial y Pontificia Universidad Mexicana Athenas del Nuevo Mundo
1748. Mexico. Nuevo Rezado de Doña Maria de Ribera. 8vo. 20 ff., xcviii, 174 pp. Contemporary limp vellum, hinges broken or starting, spine lettered in ink, lightly soiled, ties as fragments. Some wear to outer margin of title page touching a little of engraved border, else a very good copy.- First edition of a rare literary work written and published in Mexico, by a Mexican author, printed by a woman. Attractive Mexican 18th century impression, with the title page printed in two colors and with typographical border, and two almost-full-page woodcuts, showing the arms of the Spanish Kings and a diagram on pp. 41. The work is a relation of the celebrations held at the University of Mexico with the occasion of Ferdinand VI being crowned as King of Spain; it contains the poetry that several Mexican colonial academics prepared for the event. The poetry compares the Colossus of Rhodes with the magnificence of the King, and the University of Mexico to a learned institution to be regarded as the Athens of the New World. We have been unable to trace any copies having been offered at auction. Copies in the United States include JCB, Yale, Indiana, University of California Berkeley, and University of Texas (Austin). Sabin, 72533; Palau, 273525; Medina, Mexico, 3916.
