Hieronymum Porro, Venice, 1589. Engraved title page, 70 leaves, 60 blank leaves. 18th century calf. Rebacked with a new spine. Includes 2 full page engravings and 32 emblems in the text. Nicely engraved by Giralamo Porro (1520-1604). These pseudonymous series of prophecies concerning various late medieval popes were circulating in the late 13th to the early 14th century. This series of roughly thirty prophesies follow Greek Byzantine format and were meant to influence papal elections. Caillet #5541; Adams #213; Brunet col 533 'Bonne edition et que l'on recherche cause des fig'. Signature of James Stephenson, St. Johns College, Cambridge 1795 on the inside front blank. Small marginal stain along the five preliminary leaves. Contemporary annotations in brown ink along the margin of the last engraving.
