New York: A.H. Kellogg, 1885. [4],[107]-256,[5]-106pp., apparently as issued. Original printed peach wrappers, later black cloth backstrip. Wrappers chipped at edges, small hole at center of rear wrapper, mild soiling, contemporary ownership inscription of Brooklyn subscriber on front wrapper. Text somewhat toned, some leaves detached. Overall good plus. An especially-early and perhaps unique surviving example of the 1885 New York and New Jersey Telephone Company phone book, with listings for thousands of area telephone subscribers, their subscriber numbers (aka, their phone numbers), and their addresses. The rear wrapper is printed with a "Map Showing Territory Reached by Lines of the New York & New Jersey Telephone Company," showing the extent to which the company had connected the New York metropolitan area with the relatively new invention of the telephone. The directory opens with a special note on the use of the telephone directory, and a notice to subscribers that "The use of your telephone by others is an injury to you as well as to all regular subscribers, and is prohibited by contract." This is followed by directions on how to make a telephone call - a practice later common to the American experience, but a rather new one in 1885. The detailed directions begin with, "Press in the button and turn the crank briskly; unhook the listening telephone (receiver) and put it close to your ear, when Central Office will inquire: 'What number?'
