Bruxelles; 1845-1862, Atlas 1859: Meline, Cans et Compagnie. In 6 large quarto volumes and 1 folio atlas. Each with half-titles and engraved frontispieces (except volume 6 which lacks a frontispiece) Illustrated with tissue guarded engravings. Atlas volume contains 66 maps; 58 single page and 8 double page maps beautifully hand colored. Thiers' work was published in various sizes and volumes; in quarto and octavo; in 30 volumes, 20 volumes, 20 volumes in-8, 20 volumes in 10, 12 volumes and 6 volumes and possibly other combinations. While this is an ex-library set, the only library markings visible is the library's perforated stamp hidden within the vignette on the title page. Previous near contemporary owner's name, also with a few marginal notes to a few other volumes, first and second volume with pages of hand written notes bound in at rear. Each volume has a summery at the end of the work along with a table for the volumes found at the end of volume 6. Thiers has written an advertisement at the rear of volume 3 which is essentially his foreword. What sets this set apart from other sets, is the atlas volume with its remarkable fully hand colored maps housed within a cloth covered clamshell. Thiers is considered the best and most authoritative author on the French revolution along with his other major works which helped boost his political career. He was first a supporter, then a vocal opponent of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. He began the present work in 1840 taking him 15 years to complete.
