Celan, Paul and Sol LeWitt
Morning Star, Peninsula, Ormeau Baths Gallery, 1997. Cloth covered box (8 x 5 3/4 in.) with printed gouache by Sol LeWitt on cover. This is no. 99 from an edition of 100 numbered copies signed by LeWitt. The edition includes individual reproductions of seven on the gouaches LeWitt made for the edition, a copy of the book, Irish, and a colophon page signed by the artist. Irish includes Celan's poem "Irisch" along with translations from the German into English by Pierre Joris (who also contributes a note on the poem), Harry Gilonis, Jerome Rothenberg, Edwin Morgan, and Anselm Hollo, and translated into Irish by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.This was Anselm Hollo's copy and includes one of the original gouaches signed by LeWitt in the year of publication, a lengthy TLS (c. 275 words, dated Dec. 1997) to him from Alec Finlay, publisher, along with a small prospectus for the work. Box shows minor shelf wear, all contents fine. [N.b. Irish was published in 1997, rather than 1977 as stated in the book.] [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
